About Barbara Dean Johnson
Barbara Dean Johnson worked within the mental health system at both the county and state levels, dedicating her energy to champion the causes of people diagnosed with mental illness. She believed strongly that recipients of mental health services should be involved in all aspects of the system and that their voices should be heard. Based on this belief, she helped build and sustain the Pennsylvania mental health consumers' movement and the Pennsylvania Mental Health Consumers' Association. Upon her death in 1999, her family requested that memorial contributions be made to PMHCA to establish the Barbara Dean Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund. This Fund is now being used to provide the scholarship described herein.
